LADY SINGS THE BLUES

As the daughter of a jazz musician, I grew up with them,

all the legends like Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald…

In dark, smoky jazz bars, like the legendary Dr. Jazz in Düsseldorf,

I spent many a Saturday night with my friends.

I was very proud of my dad when he performed with his “Jollys Jazz Orchestra”.

It was a world away from the garden gnome idyll of my classmates….

When I heard the great Billy Holliday the other day – “I don`t sing, I feel” – I really wanted to paint her, in memory of my youth.

When I saw her portrait I thought: Dear Billy – “I don`t paint, I feel”!
